The drumset we know today brings together elements of percussion from around the world. We have tom tom drums with their open sound, snare drums with their distinctive raspy sound, and cymbals of all kinds. All can be struck with our hands, with sticks, mallets and brushes. With the use of pedals, we can play various parts of the set at once. Not bad!
Since the jazz players of the early 20th century began to arrange drums into a ‘trap’ set, the drumset has settled somewhat into its current form – and there’s so much to learn about playing the drums!
