Drum Lessons

The drumset we know today brings together elements of percussion from around the world. We have tom tom drums with their open sound, snare drums with their distinctive raspy sound, and cymbals of all kinds. All can be struck with our hands, with sticks, mallets and brushes. With the use of pedals, we can play various parts of the set at once. Not bad!

Since the jazz players of the early 20th century began to arrange drums into a ‘trap’ set, the drumset has settled somewhat into its current form – and there’s so much to learn about playing the drums!

TUTORS

Tailored for You

At Rachel’s Music Centre, we recognise that each student of the drums comes to lessons with their own interests, capacities and approaches to learning. Things they find to be fun and interesting, and things not so much so! With all of this in mind, lessons are designed for each student as they continue through their learning process.

At Rachel’s Music Centre, students of drums can prepare for exam boards including: Rockschool, Trinity College London, London College of Music

Testimonials

Brian has been teaching my daughter drums for years now and has been so encouraging. They have a great rapport which I think is key”

Jane

We were told to take up drum lessons to aid with dyspraxia and it really has made such a difference to his confidence. We are so grateful we tried it.”

Michael

We tried the drums and on advice worked with just practice pads at the start. She took to it so much that we knew the investment in drums would be worth it!”

Studying drums at Rachel’s Music Centre can include:

  • rhythm studies – each of us can learn more about rhythm, including learning to play and to recognise foundational rhythms from cultures around the world, learning to play more than one rhythm at a time, and much more!
  • stick control – learning the basic strokes that make up most drumming, working towards easy and fluent control of the sticks for the music we wish to play
  • dynamics – the use of soft and loud notes, especially in close proximity to each other, can add layers of interest and excitement to our playing
  • drum rudiments – simple patterns to develop both stick control and drumming vocabulary
  • songs – learning to play songs calling for drumming in various styles
  • music theory – including sight reading and notation for snare drum and for drumset
  • working towards external exams (or in-house exams) is encouraged so that students can have the benefit of all that can be learned in the preparation
  • for students not wishing to take exams, lessons can proceed on material from syllabus, or from elsewhere, towards goals that interest and excite the student
