Saxophone Lessons

Saxophones come in many shapes and sizes, cover a wide range of pitches, and offer an array of timbres and colours unique to saxophone. Saxophones today are played in ensembles small and large, in orchestras, in brass and marching bands, as well as in jazz and other contemporary music settings.

TUTORS

Tailored for You

At Rachel’s Music Centre, we recognise that each saxophone student comes to lessons with their own interests, capacities and approaches to learning. Things they find to be fun and interesting, and things not so much so! With all of this in mind, lessons are designed for each student as they continue through their learning process.

At Rachel’s Music Centre, students of guitar can prepare for exam boards including: RIAM, ABRSM, Trinity College London

Studying saxophone at Rachel’s Music Centre can include:

  • fundamentals of playing saxophone including sound production, fingerwork, care of the instrument, and co-ordinated uses of breath, lips and tongue
  • making a close study of selected pieces for saxophone, further developing techniques in a more musical setting, and assimilating the structure and beauty of the pieces themselves
  • music theory including rhythm, ear training, music reading and notation
  • opportunities to play in groups are made available to students
  • working towards external exams (or in-house exams) is encouraged so that students can have the benefit of all that can be learned in the preparation
  • for students not wishing to take exams, lessons can proceed on material from syllabus, or from elsewhere, towards goals that interest and excite the student

Bob

Bob originally studied violin in junior school, and switched to bassoon in secondary school. He achieved distinction in Grade 8 and was a member of the British Youth Wind Symphony (same year as Annie Lennox, later of Eurythmics)
A passion for jazz saw him take up the saxophone, flute and clarinet. He has played for many years on a semi-professional basis with a variety of jazz, rock and soul bands, including his own for which he arranged the music. He moved to Ireland to work in the pharmaceutical industry in 1997 and went into music and teaching full time in 2008. Since then he has taught privately, in specialist music schools and for Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath. He also worked with the Athlone Youth Orchestra and Sinfonia, a collaboration with Maynooth University.
Many of his students have achieved impressive exam results, both RIAM and ABRSM. Others play purely for pleasure. Whichever route students prefer, Bob is keen and able to help them reach their goals. Students range from national school age to retired. It’s never too late or too early (providing your hands are big enough for the instruments!)
Bob continues to play jazz with Laois based quartet No Coast and the Midlands Big Band from Athlone. He also works with a variety of bands ranging from wedding pop and rock to Afrobeat!
